01 · WHAT WE DO

Spatial research, told through film.

VOGELFREI produces long-form documentary film and spatial research that examines how places change — through urbanization, migration, industry, and cultural shift — and what that change means for the people who live through it.

Our work combines observational filmmaking, archival research, mapping, and design to build a layered record of a place, rather than a single narrative about it. Each project begins with time on the ground: months, sometimes years, spent with the communities and landscapes at the center of the story.

The result is work that moves at the pace of its subjects, produced for audiences who want to understand a place, not just glimpse it.

02 · WHO WE ARE

Researchers, thinkers, designers, and media makers.

VOGELFREI is a small, independent team working across disciplines — documentary production, spatial and social research, and design. We are not a traditional production company or a traditional research institute; our work sits deliberately between the two.

We partner with local researchers, translators, and fixers in every region we work, and we build long-term relationships with the communities we document rather than treating them as subjects to be captured and left behind.

03 · WHY WE'RE DOING IT

Because spatial change is hard to see until it's finished.

The forces that reshape a place — development, policy, climate, capital — usually move slowly enough that they're invisible day to day, and fast enough that by the time they're visible, the change is already irreversible.

We believe documentary film and spatial research, used together, can make that kind of change legible while it's still happening — while there's still time for the people affected by it to be seen, heard, and represented in how their own story is told.
